CHOOSING A SCALE & PAGE LAYOUT

While it may seem premature to decide on a scale and page layout before you put pencil to paper, you'll save a lot of time in the long run by not mapping an area only to have to remove to make room for the legend.

When considering a scale, consider your intended audience. Will they be competitive orienteers, used to 1:15,000 or will they be children, who could benefit from a larger scale? Here's advice from our junior mappers.

About Scale

Scale doesn't mean much until you print the map. The relationship of map/print scale is important for the size of symbols though. If it's a real standard size orienteering map set the scale to 1:15000, then you can print at 1:10000 or 1:15000 and get the correct size symbols for each scale. (The 1:10000 symbols are 50% larger).

The wrong way to do it is set the map scale to 1:10000 and print at 1:10000 or 1:15000. Symbols are too small at both scales. Smaller symbols are bad because the mapper can put in too much detail.

This is quite a problem for trail-o and I suppose park-o maps. Sam Smith suggests a map scale one size up from the final print scale for trail-0. So if you are going to print at 1:5000, set your map scale to 1:7500, then you'll get nice normal looking symbols instead of tiny ones or huge cartoon ones. He's never used the change scale - it's possible that will resize symbols for you.

Tips for Sizing Your Projects

The final printed page will determine how much area you can map. There are basically two sizes of paper: 11x17 inches (420x257 millimeters) and 8.5 x 11 inches (257x210 millimeters). The rule of thumb for page layout is: meters on the ground divided by millimeters on the page equals map scale in thousands.

For a large page size at 1:15,000 scale, you can cover an area 6.3 kilometers by 3.8 kilometers. For a small page size at 1:10,000 scale, you can cover an area 2.1 kilometers by 2.5 kilometers.
