Moore's Bridge, Sunday, April 28, 2024

Join GAOC on Sunday, April 28th at Moore's Bridge for an Orienteering change-of-pace with a 75 minute Score-O event.

Primary courses offered will be a 75-minute Score-O event and regular courses Yellow through Green. For those unfamiliar, this Score-O event will have a start, finish, and 25 control locations identified, but no pre-determined route; you determine the controls you will visit and in what order. Each control will have a point value of 10, 20, or 30 points identified on the clue sheet. The person with the most points in the shortest amount of time is the winner. The caveat is the time limit; runners must return within the 75-minute course time limit or receive a penalty of 5 points for each minute or portion of minute which they are "over-time". (i.e. if you are 1.5 minutes over time, you will be assessed a 10 point penalty). Yellow, Orange, Silver, Brown, and Green courses will also be available with a 2.5 hour time limit. The Score-O will be a mass start event beginning promptly at 0915 and a finish time of 1030. Regular courses will have a start window of 0930 to 1130; runners will select their start times when registering and have the opportunity to run two courses if desired.

Notes

  1. The Score-O event will be limited to 75 participants. Runners should assemble at the start area at 9:05 a.m. for roll call and map handout. Runners will have 5 minutes to review map and plan their routes. A shotgun start will occur at 9:15 a.m.; no start box will be used as runner times will start automatically. Runners late to the start will already be on the clock. Runner times will end when they return to the finish area (control box).
  2. Arrive early as parking can be limited; carpool if possible. There is a $5 parking fee; bring cash. Please support the park.
  3. Water will NOT be provided on any course. A camelbak water carrying device is highly recommended, particularly given the warm temperatures. Participants must bring their own compasses, whistle, and water. Additionally, please be respectful of meet and scoring officials by maintaining appropriate social distancing. DO NOT congregate around the scoring tent after you have downloaded.
  4. The map has been recently updated; thank you Sam! That said, there are many new trails and some older trails that are still mapped, but somewhat indistinct in cases. Caution on only using trails to navigate. Contours are mapped at 2.5 meter intervals and will be your friend.
  5. Pre-paid pre-registration is required. (Registration will open for our volunteer meet directors at 7:00pm on Monday, April 22nd, and will open for other volunteer coupon holders at 8:00pm on Monday, April 22nd. Registration will open to everyone at 9:00pm on Monday, April 22nd.) No paper forms or payments will be accepted on-site.
  6. Participants will be started promptly at the start time they select when pre-registering. To facilitate social distancing, please come to the start no earlier than 3 minutes before your start time, but be sure to be at the start on time.
  7. Runners will have the option to run one or two courses using the same e-stick. If you want to run two courses, you must pre-register for both courses. On the pre-registration form, you will select your start time for your first course. At the event, when you are ready to start you second course, come back to the start to be assigned a start time. You must start your second course before noon.

Volunteers needed

Event volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Each volunteer is awarded a coupon that may be used for discounted (and early) event registration or items from our merchandise page.

If you are interested in helping out at the start, search and rescue, or control pickup, please select your volunteer position(s) on the registration page or contact the meet director.

Directions

From the traffic circle in Whitesburg (the intersection of GA5 and GA16), go north on GA 5 (the opposite direction from McIntosh Reserve) for about a mile and turn right on Black Dirt Road. The park will be down about a mile on the right. There is a sign at the entrance.

The park address is 615 Black Dirt Rd, Whitesburg, GA, accessible via GA Hwy 5. This is a Carroll County Park like McIntosh Reserve, and it is not very well known, so your GPS may not know about this park or address.
