Sope Creek was originally called Soap Creek after a Cherokee named "Old Soap". He and his family were forced to move to Cherokee County, where they lived until they were relocated on the Trail of Tears. The spelling of Sope Creek was changed sometime in the 19th century.
The ruins at Sope Creek are of the Marietta Paper Mill Ruins. The Mill, built in 1859, was a primary source of paper for the South and rumored to be the place where Confederate Money was printed (this is unsubstantiated). Garrard's Soldiers burnt the mill down on July 5, 1864.
Near the south end of Sope Creek park there is a graveyard from the late 1800s, the Scribner family. According to the 1935 history book, the Scribner house was located near the graveyard.
