EQUIPMENT
Great
news! You don't need to purchase any equipment to
Orienteer at your first meet. Just wear long pants
and comfortable walking or running shoes and you'll
do fine. You might also want to bring a snack, some
dry clothes, and of course your registration fee.
As
you get into the sport and progress through the
Yellow course, you'll want to purchase a base plate
compass. Most Orienteers at this
level use the following equipment:

Compass I'll
mention this now because many folks like to start working with a
compass right from the start. If you plan on purchasing a
compass, purchase a base plate compass, available at Wal-Mart or
REI for around $15.00.

Whistle
A small
whistle comes in handy if you get injured in the woods. Simply blow
three times to alert others around you. Do not blow it if
you are lost, only if you are injured and need help. |

Gaiters
Gaiters are lower-leg coverings
made out of rip-stock material and usually have a protective
padding to help protect your lower legs as you run thru
the brush.
Many GAOCers recommend Thorngaiters by
Treklite, which may be purchased from one of the vendors on the
USOF website. |

Orienteering
Pants
Orienteering pants are also made out of
rip-stock material, which resists tears. These may also be
purchased from one of the vendors on the
USOF website.
