PRE-CONVENTION PROGRAM

The Carolina Orienteering Klubb (COK) kicks off
the convention week with three days chocked full of orienteering
activities. The Blue Ridge Challenge A-Meet
offers two days of USOF sanctioned competitive orienteering. The
Mountain Bike-O and Car-0
offer non-sanctioned recreational orienteering events.
The Blue Ridge Challenge, Mountain Bike-O
and Car-O are being offered as a
pre-convention program for the USOF Convention, hosted by GAOC and COK
at Truett-McConnell College. Competitors do not have to attend the
USOF Convention to register for these events,
however, they should use the combination registration form
available at the left-hand navigation button on this page.
Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge Challenge
(BRC) is a two-day, US
Orienteering Federation (USOF) sanctioned A-meet, open to members
or non-members. Competitors compete individually in categories
based on gender, age, and course, according to USOF rules. Awards
are presented to the top three finishers in each category and
results are applied to national rankings for USOF members.
Recreational Orienteering
Noncompetitive recreational orienteering will be offered on
Saturday and Sunday for beginner and intermediate (White through
Orange).
No pre-registration. Sign up at the meet site. Map fees per day
are $6.00 for COK/GAOC/USOF members and special groups (ROTC/Scouts)
and $8.00 for all others. Rental compasses will be available for
$1.00.

Mountain
Bike-O...June 28, 2004 - DuPont State Forest, Cedar Mt, NC |
The Mountain Bike O is a non-sanction event open to
everyone. The event is in a standard orienteering format done on
mountain bikes with Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced courses.
Awards will be given for the top three finishers in on each course
in the following categories: Male and Female adult (20 and up) and
Male and Female Juniors (19 and under). A CPSC or Snell
Memorial Foundation approved bicycling helmet will be worn at all
times while on the course. Rental bikes and helmets are available. |
Car-O...June
27 or 28, 2004 - From DuPont State Forest to TMAC |
The Car O is a non-sanctioned event opened to all licensed
drivers. The fees and competition are by vehicle. This event is in
a Line O format where points are awarded for locating specific
points designated on a highway map. Awards will be given for the
top three finishers. This event is not timed and all applicable
motor vehicle laws will be followed. |

From
Asheville, I-40
Take I-26 east to exit 9, and take highway 280 to Pisgah
Forest. Turn left on US 64 in Pisgah Forest. From Pisgah Forest,
travel east on US64 for 3.7 miles to the Texaco station in
Penrose. Turn right on Crab Creek Rd and continue 4.3 miles and
turn right on DuPont Rd. As the road climbs the hill, turn left on
Sky Valley Rd and continue about a mile past the farmhouse to the
parking lot on the right.From Greenville, SC
US 276 up Ceasar's Head. Several minutes after entering North
Carolina, turn right on Cascade Lake Road in Cedar Mountain, NC.
From Cedar Mtn., take Cascade Lake Rd east, then turn right on
Staton Rd, which then becomes DuPont Rd. in Henderson County. As
the road descends, turn right on Sky Valley Rd. and continue about
a mile past the farmhouse to the parking lot on the right.
From Spartanburg (I-26 westbound)
Take the Hendersonville exit #18 westbound on US64. In
downtown Hendersonville, take US25 South (Church Street) about 8
blocks, and turn right on Kanuga Street. From Hendersonville, take
Kanuga Rd. past Jeter Mountain, then turn left on Old CCC road
(before reaching Holmes State Forest). Turn left on Sky Valley Rd.
at the end of Old CCC. Continue about a mile on Sky Valley, past
the farmhouse to the parking lot on the right. |
Accommodations |
Most hotels in Brevard are more than $100 per
night. Hendersonville, which is @ 30 miles from DuPont State
Forest, is a little better. Mention "The Blue Ridge
Challenge" at most hotels in Hendersonville for a discount.
Please book
as early as possible as June is a very busy month for all of the
accommodations in the area. |
